Adherence: The Foundation of Powerlifting Success

No matter what sport you are in—powerlifting, bodybuilding, strongman, or endurance sports—adherence is the foundation of success. If you’re working with a coach, it’s your job to follow the plan as written. As coaches, we spend years refining what works and what doesn’t. We’ve made mistakes, found what produces results, and built systems to help athletes succeed.

When you hire a coach, you are putting trust in that process. You looked at their experience, their methods, and their results. But your results don’t just come from having the best plan. They come from executing it.

If you adhere, you will make progress. Maybe not as fast as someone else, but the results will come. If you don’t follow the plan—if you skip sessions, change your programming, adjust your diet without communication—you are taking yourself off course. Worse, your coach won’t know what’s actually happening and won’t be able to adjust your plan properly.

This happens often. Athletes start with good intentions. Over time, they second-guess the plan or decide they know better. They change things without discussion. And suddenly, their progress stalls.

The coach-athlete relationship is a partnership. Both sides have responsibilities. You expect your coach to build a smart, effective program. Your coach expects you to follow it and communicate openly.

If you respect your coach’s time and expertise, stick to the plan. If you find yourself unable to follow the plan or disagreeing with the approach, have an honest conversation. Staying with a coach out of personal loyalty while ignoring their programming does not help you.

If you aren’t seeing results, the first question to ask yourself is: Am I actually adhering to the plan? Fix that first before blaming the programming.

In the end, no coach can outwork a lack of adherence. If you want results, follow the plan with consistency and honesty.
